    Gamespot – 6.0 / 10
There are times when War in the North shows you the game it could have been--when the exhilaration of mowing down fearsome foes or the satisfaction of seeing your character become more powerful makes you want to press forward. But each time the game starts to hit its stride, it soon stumbles and falls on its face. For a trio of heroes whose destiny is to save the northern regions of Middle-earth, this fellowship spends too little time earning glory and too much time crawling around in the mud.

    IGN – 7,0/10
While it's admirable that the team had opted to create an original story set alongside the events in the books, you'll wish that they had attempted to take more risks with the project. The characters are bland and lifeless, and the combat, while fun at first, gets pretty repetitive before too long.

    1UP – B/A+
A lot of people are going to overlook War in the North in favor of the plethora of amazing titles being released this season, and I completely understand why. In a time full of stellar sequels, it's difficult for anything new to stand out. But once the dust settles from the landslide of AAA autumn titles, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North will be there to provide a simple and fun way to satiate your loot-dropping addiction -- one eagle barrage at a time.

    Gamingunion – 7/10
How much fun anyone will have with The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is really based on a few factors beyond just storyline and gameplay, like how many friends you may have to play it with and how much you care about the lore of Middle Earth. Putting aside the fact that these three characters' connection to the overall plot is fairly weak, the action in-game can be fairly intense once three players take control in place of the frustrating AI. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a game meant to be played with friends and it thoroughly shines as a multiplayer title. New game plus features and a hardcore difficulty further enforce that, adding a fair amount of replay value to the overall package. The Lord of the Rings fans should be proud, War in the North may not be perfect, but it certainly succeeds rather well where most others have failed.

    ZTGD – 7,5/10
Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a solid action RPG with plenty of loot to collect. I really got a sense of Champions of Norrath the more I played it, and wanted to continue grinding, which is uncommon for me. I loved playing co-op even with its setbacks, and honestly, since Crimson Alliance and Torchlight, I haven't had this much fun in a game like this in years. Sure, it has shortcomings on all sides of the fence, but when you can lose five and six hour chunks of time without even noticing it, the game is certainly doing its job right.

    GameInformer – 5,50/10
I can only say one good thing about War in the North: It could have been awesome. The conceptual framework is solid, and with some extensive tuning and polish, it would be fun to play. Just thinking of War in the North reimagined as an old-school isometric adventure (à la Dark Alliance) gets me pumped up…but it's too late for that now. Snowblind Studios' record proves that it knows how to make good action/RPGs. I hope that happens again in the future.

    GameFront – 85/100
Overall, War in the North is a very successful effort for Snowblind. It's a fun title that you can enjoy with your friends or alone, and it incorporates a well-known property without mangling what makes that property great. It brings the hack-and-slash RPG to current consoles and PC, and it does so in a very proficient manner. More importantly, you don't need to be a fan of Lord of the Rings to have a great time playing it. If you're looking to get an action RPG fix, it would certainly be worth your time to give War in the North a chance.

    XboxAddict – 86/100
While a few things could use some revision work, overall this game is a masterpiece for Tolkien fans and shouldn't be missed. There's nothing like fighting through a massive battle in an iconic location to finish part of a quest and in the process find some amazing weapon or piece of armor that makes your character an even bigger threat against Sauron's forces. Prepare yourself to play a part in actions that will shape the history of all Middle Earth and all its inhabitants, prepare yourself for Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

    G4TV – 2/5
I wanted to like this game. I am a big Lord of the Rings fan and was ready to enjoy this experience. I would have been quite receptive to a mindless Dynasty Warriors-style hack and slash, or a Diablo-style dungeon crawler. What I got instead was an unfinished mess that should be played and studied as an example of bad game design, and it didn't even feel like Lord of the Rings. There is no excuse in this day and age for such a buggy mess. I am very sorry to say you should avoid this game at all costs.

    GameTrailers – 7,2/10
