For only 1200 MS Points ($15) you are going to experience one of the more original XBLA titles I've played on the Xbox 360 in quite some time. From the charming graphics to the smooth vibes of the narrator perfectly blended with a magical soundtrack, and the 10-12 hours of action-packed exploration and combat, Bastion is a great way to kick off the Summer of Arcade. And with so many ways to customize the various parts of the game, as well as the clever difficulty vs. reward modifiers (idols) and the New Game Plus mode, you might find yourself playing Bastion long after the summer has ended.
The more subtle design elements are what make this game magical – the moments of discovery that peel away the layers of story, the thrill of coming across an abandoned weapon left behind by the old world, and the startling choice that closes the game. The sounds and images stick in your mind after you complete the game just like when you closed the final page on a favorite childhood picture book. Bastion makes a good case for the idea that simple gameplay, straightforward design, and a clear guiding vision for art, music, and story can go a long way to making a good game great.
Gaming Age A/A
I can't emphasize enough how much of a treat I found it to be on both the audio and visual side, in addition to the excellent combat provided throughout. Then there's the really engaging narration that does a fantastic job of pulling the player deeper into the game world as you go along, and the more "gamey" aspects like the weapon upgrades, idol system, and structure unlocks that keep you coming back for more. It seriously is one of the best Xbox Live Arcade titles to be released so far this year, and I highly urge every 360 owner to give this one a look.
Fact is, I've talked long enough. Bastion does plenty of talkin' for itself, and it's all worth payin' attention to. Been a long time since a game came along with a story this well told, too. For those who need it, the combat's smart and satisfying; sharp as a machete and firey as a mortar. There's a world out there to discover, rich and unique. Seems to me that should be something worth your while.
You've done videogames proud, SuperGiant. You've done 'em real proud.
Bastion is an admirable title with a lot of great aspects going for it. It takes a bold and refreshing approach from the aesthetics and presentation, while presenting players with some interesting gameplay ideas. It's a game that will reward you for being inquisitive and taking the time to see what's on offer. While quite solemn and contemplative, the story is probably too heavy handed and convoluted in the middle, while the ambitious possibilities in the gameplay aren't always backed up by what's required of the player. Still, there is enough here to warrant a look in, despite the recent proliferation of isometric slashers. Heck, looking and listening will be enough for some…
Gamer Limit 8.5/10
For a first game from a new studio (though the folks at Supergiant Games aren't without industry experience) Bastion is an impressive title. While there are some missteps when it comes to pacing and how weapons are doled out, they're minor enough to not damper the overall experience. The reactive narrator and art style really help set this game head and shoulders above its competitors. Download Bastion and join the Kid as he unravels the mystery of the Calamity and Caelondia's fall. You won't be disappointed.
